3-time Ryder Cup Captain will host the UK’s biggest amateur golf tournament next week at The Marriott Forest of Arden, Warwickshire
The Matchplay Championship, the UK’s biggest amateur golf tournament, will head to European Tour venue Marriott Forest of Arden in Warwickshire for this year’s Regional Finals. The renowned championship venue, which has hosted several prestigious events in recent years, including the British Masters and English Open, will provide the ideal setting for over 200 competitors next week, as they battle it out for a coveted place in the Dubai Grand Final. Golf Care, the UK’s #1 specialist golf insurer, is the new title sponsor of the tournament and their ambassador, 3-time Ryder Cup Captain, Bernard Gallacher, will host the highly-anticipated event, which will be televised on Sky Sports.
The North Regional Final will take place on the venue’s Championship Course on Tuesday 26th March 2013, while the South Regional Final will be held on Thursday 28th March. Gallacher will watch all of the action unfold on the Thursday, as competitors look to secure their place at the Grand Final in the Men’s Singles, Mixed Pairs and Men’s Pairs events.
“As a Golf Care Ambassador, I am delighted to be involved in such a competitive amateur tournament that gives golfers of all levels the opportunity to experience a Ryder Cup style atmosphere, competing in intense match-play golf,” commented Gallacher. “The finalists will be rewarded for their performances at the Grand Final where they will experience a once-in-a-lifetime luxury golf trip to Dubai and conditions usually reserved for the world’s best players! It’s a great tournament and one that I’m thrilled to be associated with.”
With over 6,000 entries in this year’s Matchplay Championship, the competition will be intense. They have battled their way through several qualifying rounds to make it this far, but only forty will be lucky enough to make it to Dubai. Once in the emirate they will compete at world-renowned championship course, The Els Club, and enjoy seven nights of 5-star luxury at the stunning JW Marriott Marquis Dubai – the world’s tallest dedicated hotel.
“We’re really looking forward to seeing who is going to rise to the challenge. Not only is it the first time in that they will compete under the scrutiny of the Sky Sports cameras, but they will have to do so at a venue that has welcomed some of the best players in the world,” commented John Woosey, Tournament Director. “We’re also delighted that Bernard will be here - if anyone knows about playing under pressure, it’s him. Bernard is not only a three-time Ryder Cup Captain, but competed eight times as a player. I’m sure many of the players will look to him for advice before going out to compete.”
