Cycling in the UK has boomed over the past decade, with more and more of us getting on our bikes. Inspired by Olympic and Tour de France success, the number of cyclists on the road has increased by 12% in the last ten years, and membership of British cycling has swelled to over 50,000 – the highest membership since it was formed in 1959. The UK Cycling industry has recently been valued at £3 billion a year, with the total number of regular riders reaching 13 million and a 28% increase in the volume of cycle sales. Around ?1.5 billion was spent on bikes alone last year. In recognition of this, cycleplan has been launched by top UK specialist sport insurer, The JRW Group, to provide cover for cyclists and their equipment.
Insurance for cyclists and their equipment is absolutely crucial. As Tom Bogdanowicz, from the London Cycling Campaign, said recently, “many think that they are fully covered by their household contents policies but these do not always go far enough”, therefore you need to purchase specialist cycling insurance. In the UK a bike is stolen every minute and less than 5% are ever returned to their owners. In fact, bicycle theft accounts for around 5% of all crime in the UK. cycleplan can provide bicycle cover for up to ?10,000 for theft, loss or damage to your bicycle, with replacement of equipment on a ‘New for Old’ basis for items up to three years old. Moreover, replacement bicycle hire cover is also available, meaning that you never need to be without a bike.
We live in an ever-increasing ‘Compensation Culture’ meaning that not only do cyclists need to cover their bicycles, but also themselves. Although most collisions are found to be the fault of the motorist, in a recent survey 20% of cases were found to be the cyclists fault, and 12% were deemed to be 50:50, which can prove costly. For example, student cyclist Gary Morgan was liable for thousands of pounds in damages after his bike collided with a car, breaking the wing mirror and scratching the paintwork. The car had both the driver’s side doors replaced, which left him with a huge bill for damages. cycleplan provides Public Liability cover for up to ?5 million to protect cyclists in the instance of causing damage to a person or accidental third party property damage.
Unfortunately, it’s a fact that cycling can dangerous. It was reported in 2011 that the number of cyclists seriously injured was over 3,000 and those with slight injuries totalled well over 16,000. The likelihood is that those numbers were even greater as those were only the incidents reported to the police. Cycle safety and motorist awareness has featured prominently in the media in recent years, especially with the high-profile accidents involving Sir Bradley Wiggins and Shane Sutton last year. All cyclists should be investing in Personal Accident cover in order to protect against the impact of any injuries. cycleplan can provide cover up to ?50,000 unlike most other insurers.
The biggest increase in cycling has been seen in urban areas, particularly in London, where cycling has increased by over 110% since 2000. Coupled with this, the incidence of theft and accidents is therefore greater in urban areas than the rest of the country. Most insurers therefore factor in a postcode weighting, meaning that you can end up paying more for living in an urban area. cycleplan policies do not penalise you for where you live so you will pay the same for your cover irrespective of living in a city or the countryside.
“We are excited about the launch of cycleplan,” commented John Woosey, Managing Director, The JRW Group. “The major benefit of cycling is how accessible and enjoyable it can be as a sport, a pastime and a means of transport – but it can be very expensive if it goes wrong and you don’t have the correct insurance. Covering yourself with a specialist insurance policy like cycleplan means that cyclists can enjoy the peace of mind that they are covered. cycleplan has been designed to be the most flexible cover with the best value for money, so you can tailor your cover to exactly what you need. We are also celebrating the launch of cycleplan by offering all policies at a special 20% discounted rate. There really is no excuse not to get covered now."
